Summer barbecue at Fergs Rock and Kayak.
Monday 3rd of February, 6 pm onwards
Free climbing and food and beverages will be available
on Monday 3rd of February for all Wellington section members
and friends.
So…if you have one, bring one! The barbecue is a fun social
night for all climbers, a chance to meet some new faces,
an opportunity to catch up with the holiday goings on, as
well as providing potential to organize new and exciting
things for later in the year.
Bring your friends and enjoy free climbing at Fergs, tasty
barbecue morsels, and a broad assortment of alcoholic and
non-alcoholic bevies. But no drinking and climbing!
This year alpine addicts can update their transceiver skills
in the nearby sand volley ball courts. The challenge is
to rescue the mystery prize and claim it as your own!
All in all it will be a good night and your only excuse
for missing it is that you are out of town!

Upcoming Section Night reminders
March
In March we will be having another of our popular short talks
nights. Contact Caroline (cd@nzalpine.wellington.net.nz) if you
have a few slides from your summer adventures that we should see.
April
In April it is our AGM and Richard Wesley.
Benefits of club membership: Cheap climbing at Fergs
As an Alpine Club member you can now climb at Fergs Rock and
Kayak for only $5 EVERY Monday night, and at any other time for
only $8 (usually $12). Fergs will, however, be more vigilant when
checking membership! Make sure you carry your card and that your
membership is up to date.
For those who are interested, this is a potential saving of $2,756.00
every year! Or, if you just climb once a week on a Monday, you
will save $364.00. This becomes a $284.00 PROFIT after you pay
your Alpine Club membership. At least enough for a weekend trip
to The Bay (or maybe the mountain if you're of that persuasion).
This doesn't take into account the fact that you will all, of
course, be at the 10 Section nights we have each year....

Weather a Hart-stopper
Have just been down at Cook - returned yesterday. We managed to
get up Hochstetter Dome and Aylmer before 5 days of snow and wind
dropped 1.5m of snow at Tasman Saddle. The wind has compacted
most of it so foot penetration is about ankle depth, however there
is plenty of lee slope deposition making many of the routes dangerous.
An exit down the Tasman glacier in blizzard conditions over two
days was "interesting", 15cm of snow at Ball shelter. I rang a
friend at Unwin today and the clouds are down to the village with
Aussie forecast showing a continuation of the unsettled westerly
airflows for the rest of the week-Steve Hart
Very little bits
The editor had a fun time playing at bouldering at Lindfield in
Sydney over Christmas - a great and very easily accessible crag
in inner-city suburban Sydney if you're in the area. Personal
highlight was doing the Tourist Route third go at V3. The Balkans
looked too hard! Jo Roberts and John Barnes hiked up "Red Arete"
at Mt Cook over the same period and doubtless did other more gnarly
things.

Post Monsoon 2004 (September/October)
How about a slightly longer trip - to Nepal? Several people have
indicated interest in a section climbing trip to attempt several
trekking peaks, Island Peak and Lobuje East have been suggested
as reasonably straightforward objectives. This could include a
non-climbing trek party also. Trip leaders for both are emerging
as discussions go on. To indicate an initial interest email the
trip co-ordinator, trips@nzalpine.wellington.net.nz.
Other Sections trips
Don't forget there are other sections of the NZAC out there. Check
out there trips by going onto the main website www.nzalpine.org.nz
and clicking on the individual section newsletters.
Thanks to everyone making an effort to generate club trips. Remember,
trips can be any length, any level of difficulty and any size
(a trip of two people is just as valid as a trip of ten - but
can you take a trip by yourself? Ed.) We have a trip template
and plenty of suggestions for those who want to give it a go.
Do contact me even if you want ideas for private trips. Nothing
will be set in stone! sh@nzalpine.wellington.net.nz,
